In college I studied filmmaking and I utilize a similar process and aesthetic in my photography. I like the idea of allowing the viewer to fully study and appreciate a single frame as opposed to the constantly changing images of a film. As in film my approach to photography is many layered. When shooting my focus is on form and shape but capturing the image is only the first step.

After processing the negative I scan it directly into Photoshop. Once the image has been converted to digital my imagination is the only limitation on what I can transform it into. I do not montage several images together but rather change the look of a single image utilizing various filters.

My biggest challenge is knowing when a photograph is “done.” For some images I might add several filters and color alterations and for others only minor changes. Once the picture is complete I print it out on canvas to further soften the hard edges. I like the idea of capturing a simple, common image and transforming it into something that looks more like a painting than a photograph. In my work I strive to create an image that is pleasing to the eye and creates a lasting effect on the viewer.
